I guess the important thing to start off with is that yes, you can get a job on a cruise ship without having any specific experience - but it does limit the jobs that you will be able to apply for. Let me highlight a couple of the jobs available on a cruise ship that usually require no experience.

1. House Keeping
In this position you are responsible for the cleaning duties of the house keeping department. This position allows for promotion into other fields.

2. Dish Washer
This position means that you are literally a human dishwasher. It is your job to clean and store all guest cutlery and crockery, as well as all pots and pans.

3. General Staff

I fell in love with cruising in January of 2008. My first cruise was on the Carnival Conquest. It was 7 days. We visited Montego Bay, Jamaica, Georgetown, Grand Cayman and Cozumel Mexico. While I loved visiting new places, I was just as intrigued by the ship during that cruise. Walking around and taking in all the sights on the ship, I thought "WOW, I wonder what it's like to have a cruise ship job?", so I decided to investigate.

The Carnival Conquest debuted in 2002. It can carry 2,974 passengers and 1,150 crew members. The ship is a floating city. There are stores for shopping, multiple restaurants, a beauty salon, a health spa, a casino, a disco, multiple entertainment lounges and numerous bars. There are many different jobs openings on a large cruise ship. Let's look at a few areas of the ship.:

Entertainment

This is the most important function of the ship. When you are not sleeping, eating or visiting a port of call, you must be entertained. You are at sea for days. What are you going to do? There are contests, bingo, shows, classes, the disco, the casino and bars. The jobs available in this area are the Cruise Director (Manager of all ship entertainment), Assistant Cruise Directors to run the contests and MC the shows. Dancers, singers, band members and production crew are needed to produce the shows in the main theater. Specialty acts and Guest entertainers are needed for the main stage and the various lounges aboard the ship. Not to mention the DJ at the club and a multitude of bartenders and bar backs.

Salary Range: $3000 to $7000 US, per month

Ship Computer Systems

The navigation system, ship controls and communications are all run by computers and someone has to program and maintain them. There are also PC's in the internet lounge and terminals used by the crew that must be serviced and maintained. IT Technicians, system analysts and IT managers are required for all of technical aspects of the ship to run smoothly.

Salary Range: $3000 to $5400 US, per month

Salon Services

OK, this is probably appreciated by ladies the most. The ship has a full service salon that offers hair styling, pedicures, manicures, facials and massages. Every position held in a salon on land is needed in the ship salon. I had my very first massage on a cruise ship. It was a hot stone massage and it was FABULOUS!

Salary Range: $2000 to $3400 US, per month

Work on cruise ships is often characterized by traveling the world, visiting lots of beautiful and exotic locations, and having the time of your life. And although these things do make up a part of the job, there is another side to the job that you need to be aware of before making the decision to work aboard a ship.

The bottom line is, working on a cruise ship can be tough and demanding and not not everyone has what it takes. Homesickness is often one of the main problems during the first few weeks. Lack of time for yourself, the lack of privacy and the inability to really make a home base for yourself are also potential problems when working on a cruise ship, because of the amount of time you spend at sea.

There is also the actual living at sea to consider. Even large cruise liners can rock a lot when out on the waves, and this can prove quite hard to get used to for some. If you get seasick, it's probably not the job for you! However, most people get used to it very quickly.

Work on cruise ships also involves very different living conditions. You will be living in quite a small cabin, most likely sharing it with someone else, so you won't get much space to yourself. You might be lucky and share with someone that you get along with, but it's also a real possibility that you'll end up sharing with someone that you don't like. Being adaptable and relaxed will help a lot, but it can still be very tough.

Of course, there are also lots of benefits to working aboard a ship. No rent, no clothes washing, no commuting, no cooking. This means you won't be spending time doing chores, so you'll be able to spend your free time doing the things you want to do.

What you really have to do is ask yourself what your motive is for finding work on cruise ships. If you want to go and see lots of exotic places and get to spend lots of time in each port, then there are a few jobs that you should avoid. There are demanding positions such as cleaners, engineers and cabin stewards that involve a lot of work, and they don't get a lot of time ashore to explore the magical island where you've just docked.

However, find a job in entertainment, admin, the casino, photography, or fitness and beauty, and you will probably be able to spend much more time off the ship exploring the new locations along your route. These jobs will also be tough, but they probably have a greater chance of getting you time off to explore.

Of course, if your aim is to progress in your career in the hospitality industry, then this should be your main concern. It's great to get to see lots of new places, but when you finish your contract you'll have a wealth of experience to take into a new job back on the land.

So always consider your motive for applying for work on cruise ships, as well as carefully considering whether you are really cut out for it, and your experience will be a lot more productive.

A cruise director or cruise manager is the one responsible for all activities and entertainment on board the Cruise ship. The job is high paying and experiences are very rewarding. The cruise directors' main objective is to give an enjoyable experience to patrons aboard the ship by planning and coordinating social and cultural events. However, competition for this position is extremely stiff. You must get ahead of the competition. If you have already secured a staff position, always do excellent work and learn as much as you can. Always strive to get any experience and learn from it!

Observe and study the current cruise director and the intricacies of his job responsibilities. As much as possible, always offer assistance to the Cruise Director. It is not brown-nosing, it is learning and researching.

Never miss out on any training that the company may offer. If you have to pay then, pay. Most likely, these trainings are required to qualify you for the position in the future. If you can add further training not offered by the company to your credentials, then do so. Who knows it may become the deciding factor to eventually make you nail the job. Your co-workers may also have the same training as you but when you have something more like for example, a certificate in CPR or short courses in public speaking then you will most likely get the job.

Once the position becomes available, apply for it. Emphasize your experience and credentials. Be confident. Cruise directors always rise above any occasion.

Cruise jobs can be fun in many ways, you can make money, but it is also not every one's cup of tea.So many have a great desire to work on cruise ships, so many more have already done it over the years, with great success, seeing the world meeting people and having great adventures.

Cruise ships jobs can be very rewarding especially if you like being around people and enjoy the interaction. People (the passengers) come on cruise ships to have fun, get away and enjoy themselves. The hours can be very long and tough on you, depending on the cruise job you are doing. Its like pretty much anything in life it is what you put into it, what you get out.  Homesickness can be a problem, but you get over it pretty quickly, you are too busy working, having fun and adventures.  You find the days can fly you don't even know what day of the week it is, just when the home port is coming up.

Depending on your cruise ships jobs, most of the jobs are tips/gratuities based, unless you are in an admin job or on a set salary. Tips can be pretty good, especially as the passengers are on the cruise ship to have fun and are relaxed and generally feeling generous. So there is a great opportunity for earning good money, no rent to pay, or food to pay on board. It can set you up, for if you wanted to open your own business one day, but you do need to save, some people tend to go crazy and spend in all the wonderful ports.

Yes cruise employment is not always every one's cup of tea.

1. If you are constantly seasick and feel like crap.

2. You are not a peoples person and have to constantly deal with people.

3. You do not like confined spaces, small cabins.

When you've secured an interview for a cruise job you should start considering the most likely questions you'll be asked. Next you should think through what your answers to these questions will be so that you're ready and prepared to pass the interview with flying colors.

Many websites make cruise ship employment seem like a fantastic opportunity and indeed it is. However, you may also be led to believe it is suitable for everyone but the truth is somewhat different. Working aboard a cruise liner is definitely not an employment opportunity suited to just anyone.

In the past, many applicants have had great resumes and were fantastic at their current land based job. However, the answers given to questions asked during the interview stage made it obvious they would have difficulty living and working on cruise ships. For this reason, they weren't hired, regardless of good they would have been at the job itself.

The typical questions you'll be asked are to find out whether you can do the job and also whether or not you would make a good crew member. Some of the questions you may be asked include:
* How do you feel about living in a tiny cabin, which must be shared with another member of crew? (Explain your answer.)
* Are you adaptable? (Give examples.)

* Do you suffer from seasickness?

Being able to answer these questions positively and most importantly, honestly, means you are well on your way to proving your suitability. This gives you a big advantage in landing a cruise ship job.

Another way of giving yourself an advantage over other applicants and improving your chances is to learn a second language. You don't need to be an expert speaker, even just reasonably proficient is beneficial. Cruise liners have passengers of many nationalities and disembark at lots of countries worldwide so there is always a great demand for crew members with second language skills.

Even if you have the skills to offer directions, take a drinks or food order, or anything else that will assist a foreign passenger in some small way, you will be an asset to any cruise ship employer.

The main language on a cruise ship is English but it's also beneficial for staff to at least have a basic understanding of a second language, particularly Italian, Spanish, French or German.

Learning a new language needn't be difficult. In fact, by using speed-learning techniques it's possible for anyone to become relatively competent in no time!

A system known as 'Pattern Technique' is a simple way of acquiring an instant vocabulary in another language. For example any words ending in IC can be turned into their Spanish equivalent just by adding an 'o' at the end, giving you an immediate 253 words in your new language!

For the best chance of finding cruise ship vacancies it's worth following a specific plan of action. Trawling the top websites searching for jobs unfortunately isn't enough. In this industry, a much more pro-active approach is required. Usually when people are looking for cruise ship jobs, their first stop is recruitment websites. However, did you know around 97% of vacancies are never advertised?

That doesn't mean to say you should ignore these sites - of course not - however if you're really keen to get a cruise job then it's important that you take that extra step. The jobs that are not advertised, how do they get filled? Well, most of them are snapped up, long before they even need to be advertised, by eager job seekers who apply directly to the cruise ship companies.

Just because you haven't seen cruise ship vacancies advertised doesn't mean the jobs don't exist or aren't available. Indeed the number of cruise liners such as this is ever increasing and it seems the superliners are getting bigger and bigger every year, all vying for the title of The World's Largest Cruise Ship! Improved amenities, more passengers, and best of all more job vacancies, which is excellent news for anyone seeking cruise line employment.

Royal Caribbean is due to launch the first of its Oasis Class ships in 2009. This superliner can hold a whopping 6,400 guests, which is about 4,000 more than the present biggest ship on the planet can carry.

Opportunities for work on cruise ships are going to increase dramatically as these new liners take to the seas, meaning many more chances will be available to earn a living while traveling the world!

Cruise ship employment on these superliners can prove to be much more than just a job and the work can actually be great fun. There are lots of fellow crew members onboard, modern amenities, extra services and creature comforts, and usually the cabins are bigger and better equipped. There are a much higher number of passengers on board too, and both these and the crew will be from a greater range of countries and nationalities.

However, one downside to the larger ships many crew experience, is the fact life onboard is much more hectic. There is a wide range of opportunities available on smaller types of vessels in the cruise industry, including jobs on small yachts, large yachts, ferries, motorized sailboats, sternwheelers, river barges, exploration ships, and windjammers. These types of craft are often the venue for cruises with a more specialized theme such as river tours, environmental cruises, diving expeditions, naturalist cruises, or even simply for sailing adventures.

Those crew who have worked on both large and small ships usually prefer the intimacy and enjoy the more personal environment of working on smaller cruise ships. That's not to say they don't like the larger liners, just choose to share a more relaxed and friendly experience with their fellow crew members and guests.

A distinct advantage of the smaller ships is their ability to navigate where the larger liners can't. This means visits to destinations that are much more unique and exclusive - not to mention exciting!

For instance, imagine a cruise in Alaska - the smaller ship is able to venture closer to the glaciers and along straits that would be impossible for the larger liner to navigate.

Even the cruise ship jobs available may vary on a smaller craft. Vacancies for jobs such as Naturalists or Dive Masters are often to be found with smaller companies, whereas you won't find these offered by the larger liners.

Employees in this department are responsible for the running and maintenance of the cruise ship. Positions in the engine and deck department include deckhands, maintenance workers, engineers and officers. Their duties include ensuring that the vessel meets strict safety requirements and international maritime regulations.

Most employees in this department are from developing countries.

Engine Section

Chief Engineer
The chief engineer is responsible for the maintenance of technical operations in engineering, electrical and mechanical divisions. Extensive experience and relevant maritime education are required. Salaries range from $5500 to $8500 per month.

Chief Electrician
The chief electrician is responsible for the smooth operation and maintenance of the electrical system of the cruise ship. Extensive previous experience, relevant education and fluency in English are all required. Salaries range from $3000 to $4000 per month.

Electrician

Chief Radio Officer
The chief radio officer is responsible for ship's radio communication regarding weather, traffic, safety etc. Other responsibilities include maintaining the radio logbook, emergency radio communication devices and lifeboats. He/she is also responsible for delivering personal correspondence of crew members and passengers to and from the ship.

Salaries range from $2500 to $3500 per month.

Security Officer
The security officer is responsible for ensuring security on the cruise ship including handling suspicious luggage, passengers and crewmembers, carrying out regular checks, enforcing safety regulations etc.

Previous experience of working in the security industry is required. A military or police background is usually a bonus. Salaries range from $2500 to $3500 per month.

Deckhand
The deckhand is a handyman on a cruise ship - he does a wide variety of jobs, from painting to docking the ship, including general maintenance jobs.

No previous experience is required. However, general technical skills are a must. Salaries range from $1800 to $2500 per month.

Able Seaman
An able seaman is an entry-level position, responsible for general maintenance, cleaning, painting and other small jobs in the deck department. Salaries range from $1500 to $1800 per month.

Safety Officer

Many new ships have two showrooms. The main room is used for the big stage shows and for headline entertainers, whereas the lounge serves for stand-up comics (those rooms usually have low ceilings, which may turn out to be a problem, especially for illusionists).

These days, the trend is to allow passengers to choose what they want (free style cruising). They are free to have dinner in the dining room of their choice, at the time they choose, and they can take in the show they want whenever they please. Most of the time, there are two shows playing simultaneously, one in each room.

Advantages:

You travel free of charge on the cruise ship.
Most of the time, you have an adequate venue.
You have a sound and lighting system featuring all the technical refinement required.
You are guaranteed to give a certain number of shows and to have a public.
You can travel a lot; I've been on cruises to Australia, New Zealand, France, Italy, Greece, England, Ireland, Spain, Hawaii, Alaska, most of the Caribbean Islands and many more.
You put less mileage on your car and it needs less maintenance.

Disadvantages:

If the cruise ship has two rooms and you're playing at the same time as a big production, chances are you'll have a small audience. (Cruise lines emphasize those Las Vegas or Broadway-style shows in their ads, which makes you the "second" show.)
You often have to deal with indifferent or demotivated personnel. Technicians have missed my music cues countless times. So much that I now have a remote control system for my music.
When you're giving your show in the lounge, you are normally introduced by a member of the cruise staff, since the cruise director is acting as emcee in the main room. Most of the staffers have no formal training as presenters… Many times, they have mispronounced my name… That is, when they didn't forget it right out!
You must be willing to travel a lot, unless you live close to Miami, since the main ports are in Miami and Fort Lauderdale.
It happens often that you'll have to work on the day of your arrival. In fact, I'd say it happens 25% of the time.
You must keep to the dress code although things are getting a little more relaxed in that area lately. During a 10-day cruise, you should have to attend 2 formal evenings (with tuxedo), and 1 or 2 semi-formal evenings. The other evenings are casual, which means docker-type pants with a polo shirt are fine. No T-shirts or sandals after 6 p.m.
You sleep in a cabin 10 ft by 18 ft on average.
If you're like me, you'll eat at the buffet three times a day. Personally, I find eating in the dining room takes too long (approximately two hours). What's more, you have to socialize with passengers sitting at your table in the dining room (I quickly got tired of answering the same questions over and over.)
As long as you haven't done your act, you're incognito. But as soon as you've given a show, people recognize you, come to talk to you and ask you questions. I must admit I thought it fun at the beginning, but after a while...
You might have to work while the sea is rough. If you have accessories on wheels, that might be a problem. Personally, I use volunteers for my act. Since passengers on cruise ships are 65 on average, I have to be very careful when the boat rocks because many of them find it hard to keep themselves from falling!

Some advice:

Bring something to read. You'll need it while you wait in airports or during long flights.
Bring some energy bars. Many airlines don't serve meals anymore on their flights.
Make sure you have in your hand luggage a change of clothes and a toilet bag (toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, etc.); airlines manage to lose my luggage two to three times a year! (Just last week, I arrived on time, but my suitcases didn't… One ended up in Pittsburgh and the other two in Charlotte.) You might have guessed it: I was on the program that night. I was replaced by another act and I received my luggage two days later!
Have your intro on CD if it's important to you.
Negotiate to have transportation expenses for your equipment covered in your contract. If possible, have a double of all your accessories and send them by freighter.

Forget you've ever watched a single episode of "The Love Boat". Block out those fond memories of Gopher, Isaac, Julie and even that kid that was on for a while. Erase all mental images of Captain Stubing's socks. Don't even THINK about playing the Love Boat theme song in your head.

As engaging as the seagoing sitcom might have been, it should not be used as a point of reference for anyone considering a cruise ship job. Our happy-go-lucky heroes might have been world class party animals but there was one important element missing: work. Most crew members work seven days per week. Contracts usually last at least six months. You don't get to go home on the weekends. You have to work the holidays.

Are there really opportunities? You bet! Compared to other industries, cruise lines have a high employee turnover rate. Many people work on ships as a means to see the world, save money and have some fun. They don't do it with the intention of developing a lifelong career (although it can be addictive!) The cruise industry is booming away at an all time high with over 190 ships and 17 new ship buildings scheduled over the next two years. That's about 130,000 jobs.

Most cruise ships employ a multi-national crew. Sometimes there are as many as 80 different nationalities on one ship. In many cases nationality influences job opportunities. It is not uncommon to find each department on one ship is comprised of the same nationality unique to the other departments. That helps prevent culture clashes where they live, work and play together.

Crew for many of the behind the scenes jobs are recruited from the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia and Caribbean islands. Even though these jobs might pay less than U.S. hourly minimum wage, the salary represents a substantial income in these countries where the U.S. dollar is strong and the exchange rate is great.

Since the cruise lines do not have offices in these countries, they enlist the assistance of local crewing agencies who mainly place crew on cargo ships and offshore oil rigs.

If you are American, Canadian or European and you are interested in a hotel department or entertainment department job, your best plan of action would be to apply directly to the cruise line or concessionaire.

The beauty salon, gift shop, photography service and casino are almost always concessionaires. These companies set up and maintain facilities onboard and share the profits with the cruise line. They hire their own employees.

To apply, send a cover letter, resume and photograph. The cruise line will use your photo to get a sense of how well you present yourself. A personal interview is not always required. It is very important that the materials you submit look as professional as humanly possible. The cruise lines receive gazillions of submissions. In order to reduce them to a manageable amount, the first step in the hiring process is the elimination process. If your materials are sloppy, incomplete or sent to the wrong department they will be trashed immediately.

Watch out for rip-offs. Never pay a fee up front unless you are given a signed contract for a job. There is no such thing as an "official" application form that all of the cruise lines use. Never pay a security deposit. There are no centralized hiring facilities for all the lines. Posting your resume online is a waste of time. If you plan on buying a "How to Get a Job on a Cruise Ship" book, then make sure that you check out the authors credentials. Have they even worked on cruise ship before? Is their information up-to-date and accurate?

Some of these expensive "books" are actually a handful of photocopies stapled together, produced by an enterprising cruise passenger who's objective is to con you and a hundred other unsuspecting souls into paying for their next cruise. The real problem is not the money it cost you to buy the book - it's the time and effort that you wasted by following their incorrect instructions and out-dated information.

There is no quick and easy way. As with any job search, you have to have to correct information to hand, work hard at it, do it right the first time and compete. Try to make it as easy as possible for the person on the other end. Who would YOU hire; someone that made your job difficult or someone that made it easy?

Hopefully this information will give you the "big picture" and get you pointed in the right direction. On my first attempt at cruise ship employment, I was misguided by one of those expensive handfuls of photocopies and I applied for a job that did not exist. The result was a frustrating waste of time effort and money.

Now that you have an idea what that "something for everyone" is that the Love Boat theme song promises, go ahead and play it in your head.

This is great news for those looking for cruise line employment because there will be a demand for nearly 11,000 new crew members to fill every position imaginable - from cleaners to entertainers to shop staff to bar staff to security to casino to photographers and many more.

Here’s a look at some of the new cruise ships being launched in 2007 and how many new crewmembers each new ship will need:

The cruise line industry can be a TOUGH industry to get into, make no mistake.

In fact, I sent off 25 resumes before I heard so much as a whisper when I first started applying to work onboard a cruise ship. And I know people who took over a year and several interviews before they got their job.

The people who eventually land their ’dream job’ of working on a cruise ship, are generally the ones who persisted the most. These people did not give up at the first sign of rejection - they kept on applying - no matter how many knock-backs they got.

Here’s one such great example of persistence that I’d like to share with you. It’s an email I received a few weeks back from a girl who proved to be one of the most determined people I’ve come across so far.

After many, many months of trying, applying and even flying (she once flew to Belgium for an interview!) and MANY rejection letters received - she finally got her ’dream job’ as a Purser for Carnival Cruise Lines.
